I lost my boots in transit babe

song clue: Ken Kesey

I find it interesting that all of my favorite books feature the same sort of main character- the young man who is a bit lonely in the world and is searching for something. These are usually what I consider my favorite books:

-The Moviegoer- Walker Percy
-A Confederacy of Dunces- John Kennedy Toole
-The Grandissimes- George Washinton Cable
-Waverley- Sir Walter Scott
-Catcher in the Rye- JD Salinger
-Foucault's Pendulum- Umberto Eco
-On the Road- Jack Kerouac
-Wind, Sand, and Stars- Antoine de Saint-Exupery
-Into the Wild- Jon Krakauer

In each of those books to varying degrees the main character is a young man searching for something... usually truth. I wonder what that says about me?

Am I searching for truth? In a way I guess... I kinda think that's why I enjoy Wikipedia so much. I also have a natural aversion to commercialism, advertising, public relations... that sort of thing. I enjoy political discussion in the same way I enjoy musical or sports discussions. On the other hand I can't stand the art of politicking. Maybe that is why I am/will be a journalist.

I find the same qualities of authenticity in my music selections. Whether its The Grateful Dead and their love for the moment and the experience of the live show and their songs being so much about America in general, or its Dylan and his troubadeering.

I don't claim to have some obsession with the idea of truth, in fact I think people use it far too easily, much in the same way people use the word "real" way too often. But I guess that "realness" is something I look for in life, literature, and music. Something that isn't pre-fabricated or corrupted to meet the demands of the dollar sign. Whenever I think of the book Into the Wild and Chris McCandless burning all his money in the Arizona desert I almost always think he is an idiot. But every now and then I get it- I mean I really get it.
